Week Two: Spinning Tales And Weaving Webs
Long lasting connections exist between storytelling and cloth making, evident in expressions such as weaving tales, spinning yarns, even the words text and textile with same root in Latin ‘texere’, to weave. In ancient Rome the processes of spinning and weaving were regarded with superstitious awe. Women were not allowed to hold a spindle in public for it was considered bad luck to see a woman spinning. |
