The beginning of February is a turning point on the Wheel of the Year.  Halfway between Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox.
In the north the snow can still be quite deep.  For our ancestors in Northern Europe the food supplies would most likely be depleted and in some years may have completely run out.  It was the time to take stock and determine what was remaining and how long it needed to last.  It was the time to count the candles or measure the oil left for the lamps. It was the time to assess the wood pile. In some traditions the full moon around this time of year was called the Hungry Moon or Starvation Moon or the Moon When The Wolves Howl.
Hunters often were forced to go out into dangerous conditions, hoping to find game.
And yet there was hope because this time of year marks the return of light, the sun, warmth and new growth.  And our ancestors knew that. They gathered around their hearth fires and took heart, awaiting the coming of spring.
Come join us in honoring our ancestors from Northern Europe in this season of turning and returning.
