The world of our Northern European ancestors was harsh and uncompromising. We survived and prospered by honoring the gods, forging alliances with spirits and listening to the ancestors. The wisdom of the runes provided guidance we could live by. Today there are some who trivialize the runes by playing with them, viewing them as mere letters of an alphabet or limiting them to the realm of Hollywood and the Vikings. We dishonor the runes, the gods and the spirits by thinking of them as metaphorical archetypes. They are living, unseen beings, as unique and individual as we are.
